May 2001
Oh wow! Where have we been, the past 2 months?
Sigh, what a ride. It seemed to me, at first,
that Curren wasn’t eating, wasn’t gaining weight,
but I guess I was wrong. He gained over
a pound, in the past month, making up for his
slow weight gain at the beginning of the year.
He’s back on his normal growth curve.
Oh Yes, he WALKS!
All over the place. He runs from one end
of the room to the other. The funny thing
is that, in March, he walked by himself for a
while, then quit doing it. Dan and I would
make him walk between us, and he’d fall and stumble,
but we kept trying, because we knew he could do
it. Then, in April,... It was just strange!
I was baby-sitting Gabby, one day, and Curren
just decided to walk on his own without my coaxing.
Just like that! We were in Gabby’s nursery, and
I was changing Gabby on the changing table. Curren
was standing at Gabby’s crib. For some reason
or another, I notice that Curren's very quite.
I mean... VERY quiet. I turn around, and there
he is, slowly walking across Gabby’s room, towards
a little clock on the wall. The SECOND he sees
me watching him, he drops down to the floor and
starts crawling! Later that afternoon, he did
the exact same thing! I was watching TV with Kathy,
while I waited for Dan to come by and get us.
Curren was standing at one end of the living room.
Kathy had a box of Fiddle Faddle. So Curren
focused on that box and just started walking towards
Kathy! Kathy said “Kim!” I look at Curren and,....
True to form, the moment he saw me watching him,
he dropped to his hands and knees and crawled
to Kathy!
I got the impression Curren thinks I want him
to crawl! Oh NO! I'd rather that kid
walked!
After that, Curren’s development took off in
leaps and bounds! He toddled, then he ran around,
falling, getting up, toddling, walking, running,
falling, up, toddling, walking, running!
These are the things Curren does that are both
frustrating and entertaining.:
Curren loves to open and shut doors. He loves
to. Open. And Shut. Doors. All the freaking’ time!
Open and shut, shut and open! If a door is shut
-- and he knows it’s a door, trust me -- He’ll
simply bang on it repeatedly! He’s reaching
up for doorknobs because he knows they open doors.
Curren has almost perfected his temper tantrums.
I say almost, because everyone knows that real
tantrums start when a kid is 2! But it seams my
kid is a fast learner! If there’s something he
wants that he’s not getting, he expels an angry
squawk! He beats at things! And sometimes he scratches!
I’m beginning to discover that Curren doesn’t
have to “learn” to do these things from other
kids, since he’s not around that many other kids!
He just knows how to do these things! At
first it bothered me! But now I just repeat
that mantra “Mommy does NOT negotiate with Terrorists!”
One day, he’ll get it. For now, I’ve got to let
him have at tantrum rather than give in. Because
the more I give in, the more hell act a fool to
get what he wants!
Around the end of March, beginning of April,
we began weaning him off formula, and letting
him drink primarily from sip cups. As of
his first birthday, Curren was off formula, and
drinking Soy milk!!!! And he drinks from sip cups!
No bottles!
Curren eats primarily table foods. Also, he’s
kind of on a feeding schedule... Kind of...
Curren is learning to stack things, to put objects
“into” or “through” shaped holes, is pushing buttons,
rather than just smacking them around.
Curren definitely claps! Loves to clap!
Curren kind of dances! He does that Steve Wonder
head move that I showed him, as well as clapping
his hands, and moving around... But we’ll
work on that! hee hee! As a result of my influence
on his friend, Gabby, she also does the “Steve
Wonder” head move when she dances!
These are the things Dan and I NEED to work on:
Curren MUST start sleeping in his nursery. That
is totally my fault. I’m terrified of something
happening to him, in his sleep! Also, I
don’t like leaving the nursery door open, because
the cats will go into that room and pee, and I
can’t stand the thought of closing Curren off
in that room by himself, and sooooooo...
Until we can get a good gate to put in the nursery
door, and get Curren a toddler bed for his room,
we’re going to probably keep him with us, because
I’m so lame about letting him sleep on his own!
This house is still a pseudo-disaster area! We’ve
made “safe” spots for Curren to play -- the living
room is where we do most of our playing - but
dear lord! Why can't we just get this place together?
It’s as if there’s some sort of sloth demon living
with us! I can find the time to work out
(about 1/2 an hour a day) but I can’t find the
time to vacuum?
And we’re both so tired all the time.
I guess I’m going to have to put up a wish list
and just force myself to stick to it!
