Months 9/10

March 2001

Curren’s appetite is growing... FINALLY! He still gets a bottle around 6:00 a.m., then he gets formula and breakfast around 10:30, a snack around 12, and I try to put him down for a nap, lunch around 2:30, another snack around 4, dinner around 6 or 6:30, and a bottle around 10.  He’s eating fruit, and crackers for breakfast. He gets biter bisquits, applejuice and crackers for snacks. Different kinds of crackers. No salt crackers, and stuff made for babies. He eats canned veggies for lunch and dinner, with crackers, formula, and cooked chicken.  He’s gaining weight, although I’m not sure how much he weighs at this time.

He has developed an “over the top” cry (thanks, James for the terminology!)... I mean, it’s a screech, like he’s in PAIN!!!!! He’ll cry like that at the drop of a hat, but only for me and Dan! No one else, but me and Dan! It’s a sound of anger! Angry at being put down for a nap, angry at being fed something he doesn’t want to eat, angry at getting his diaper changed before he gets his bottle! Curren’s NOT an angry kid.  He’s actually a very good kid.  He simply likes to have things his way. And he’s finally starting to learn that not everything is goinog to go his way. The problem is that when he cries like that, I rush to pick him up, to make sure he’s o.k. So now he knows he can make that sound and I’ll come running!  The other night, he looked at me, dropped Elefink on the floor and TESTED the cry to see if I would pick Elefink up. I waited for him to cry. He did.  I told him I was not giving him Elefink, just so he could through that toy on the floor again.  I took Elefink and put him away. After a few minutes, Curren was playing with Funky Monkey, and... yep.  He dropped him on the floor, watching me, waiting until I noticed, and THEN he slowly built up the cry.  I took Funky Monkey and said “Now Funky Monkey is mine.” Curren went ahead and cried until he noticed that I wasn’t reacting the way I usually do. It’s easier for me to be strong when Dan’s home with me, but... AUGH!  When Dan’s at work, and I’m alone, and Curren starts that screeching sound, I’m weak! I rush to pick him up, i give him his toys, I sing to him, I cuddle him, I soothe him, and I don’t know how I’m going to get him to stop with that manipulative cry!

Now that I’ve unloaded the frustrating things, let me tell you all about the very very good things Curren does! :-)

He says “Bah Bah” for bottle.  I can actually take thebottle, hide it and ask “Where’s the bottle?”  He’ll look around until he finds it and then he says “Bah Bah!”  He’s developing a vocabulary!

Oh, and... hee hee!  HE WALKS! Curren took his first unassisted steps on March 16th at 9:45 pm, at Kathy’s house! Of course, he took his first unassisted steps... TOWARDS KATHY!  But he did it in front of me and Dan. Then we had him walk to me, then we had him walk to Dan. He still prefers to walk holding on to things, so we give him his little push walker and he’ll RUN all over the place, chasing cats, etc.

Curren has really become attached to Gabby (see photo album) and he seemed to fall in love with Chris’s girlfriend Kim (see photo album). Also, he met The Head of the Walker Clan, Grampus! My grandfather, Javan Elmer Walker, Sr., came to visit, with his wife, Dorothy. Curren absolutely adored them both!  He fell in love with Grampus! I was so happy, I just couldn’t contain myself!

Curren’s making real progress. He still won’t play peek-a-boo with me, but I think that’s more out of choice! I don’t like to play peek-a-boo that much either! He does hold his own bottles, and feeds himself pretty well, by hand! Oh jezuz!  Soon that kid will be a year old!
